DHVSU hosts USAN Q1 meeting, partners with DOST to support SDGs

As Don Honorio Ventura State University (DHVSU) hosted the first quarterly meeting of the Universities Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Action Network (USAN), the University formalized a partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) - Pampanga by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to support the country’s efforts in achieving SDG-aligned universities in the Philippines, with the event held at the University Hostel on February 24, 2025.

This collaboration, alongside Pampanga Agricultural State University, Guagua Community College, Mabalacat City College, and City College of San Fernando, Pampanga, aims to highlight the crucial role of science, technology, and innovation (STI) in empowering local industries and improving the quality of life for citizens.

With the National Academy of Science and Technology and the University of the Philippines serving as the implementing agencies of Future Earth Philippines, alongside the Universities and Councils Network on Innovation for Inclusive Development in Southeast Asia (UNIIDSEA), this partnership aims to secure DHVSU’s commitment to becoming an SDG- aligned university in the country.

“We have established a platform to leverage our expertise, combining the enthusiasm of young minds with the knowledge of faculty and industry specialists. Together, we can contribute to the university’s long-term objectives,” noted Dr. Ranie B. Canlas, Vice President for Research, Innovation, Training, and Extension (VPRITE), in his introductory remarks

Meanwhile, during the meeting proper, Mary Michelle Quiambao, Provincial Science and Technology Director for Pampanga, shared insights on the agenda for USAN-Pampanga, which focuses on enhancing higher education’s role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Furthermore, Dr. Segundo Joaquin E. Romero Jr., UNIIDSEA President, discussed the importance of USAN for higher education institutions and introduced the Strategic Hazard Intervention for Enhancing Local Development (3C SHIELD), which aims to understand the diverse experiences of communities facing various hazards within their barangays.

The DOST-Pampanga was represented by PTSO-Pampanga Director Mary Michelle M. Quiambao, along with National Scientist and Project Leader of Future Earth Philippines, Dr. Lourdes J. Cruz.
